NewsPortmore residents still without representation2012-10-03 10:03:07 | (0 Comments)
It is not clear when some residents of Portmore will get political representation in the municipal council.
The councillors for the Portmore Pines and Greater Portmore North divisions cannot take up their places in the Municipal Council because of changes in constituency boundaries. The divisions now fall in the St Catherine Parish Council and under law the councillors cannot be sworn-in to the municipality, thereby leaving residents without representation on that body. The councillors were installed in the parish council. Responding to questions in parliament yesterday, Local Government Minister, Noel Arscott sought to assure that steps are being taken to find a legal remedy. Arscott told the House that he has received a draft order from the Chief Parliamentary Council to begin preparatory steps to fix the situation. He added that he is to seek the advice of the Attorney General’s Department and the electoral authorities regarding the best way to proceed. radio@gleanerjm.com Source: The Gleaner/Power 106 News Send your images, videos and updates to youreport@gleanerjm.com | Click here to Comment Your Comments
