Government Senator, Floyd Morris, is proposing a five per cent levy on remittances to help provide funding for the education sector.

According to Morris, this would yield approximately US$100 million or $9 billion for the government.

He says the money would go towards activities being implemented by the National Education Trust.

Morris says such the funds could cover improvements and expansion of schools, an annual cash injection for the Students' Loan Bureau and the administrative expenses of the Trust.

The mandate of the National Education Trust includes working with the private sector and Non-Governmental Organisations to raise funds for the development and maintenance of education infrastructure.
