The Guild of Students at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus says it is encouraged by efforts to prevent possible de-registration of students, who might be affected by the Students’ Loan Bureau (SLB) crisis.

The Minister of Education, Ronald Thwaites had said he would be organising a meeting today with four of the island’s universities in an attempt to secure a reprieve for students awaiting disbursement from the SLB.

The funding institution has said it doesn’t have all the money needed to fund the fees for this academic year.

UWI Guild’s president, Daniel Wilson, said he hopes Thwaites promise translates into positive results for students.

Wilson said he plans to speak with Thwaites sometime today, to find out about his meeting with the tertiary institutions.

Reports are that the University of Technology (UTech), has already indicated its willingness to offer more time to students who are awaiting disbursements from the SLB.

Today is the deadline for UTech students to pay all outstanding fees.
