Morris seeks to make 126 schools accessible to the disabled

Government Senator Floyd Morris has signalled his intention to move a resolution, which will among other things, require making at least 126 schools islandwide friendly to the disabled community.

Morris told the Senate yesterday that it should call upon the Government to use some of the funds from Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP) to help to make it possible.

In the meantime, Christine Hendricks, the executive director of the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities, has welcomed Senator Morris' move to take the matter to the Parliament.

She says the vast majority of schools in Jamaica did not have facilities to cater to the needs of the disabled and there was need for special needs teachers and improved physical facilities of schools.
