Montego Bay Metro gets more buses

2012-10-22 08:28:28 | (0 Comments)

Authorities in St James are hoping to see a reduction in traffic congestion in key sections of the parish with the addition of five new 46-seater Volvo buses to the fleet of the Montego Bay Metro Limited.

The buses, valued at approximately $34 million were handed over last week to the company by the minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Transport, Dr Morais Guy.

Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Glendon Harris, said the buses fit in with his long-term vision to reduce traffic congestion in the city since there will be a more effective way to transport commuters.

At the same time, Dr Guy says the Transport Authority will be rolling out a comprehensive programme to get illegal operations off the streets.

The new buses are equipped with security cameras and will bring the fleet to 13 to serve three routes.

Dr Guy says the new buses will not address all the needs, but pledged that the Ministry will continue to work to improve the transportation sector in western Jamaica.

He says details of the programme will be announced shortly.
