The Manchester Parish Council has activated its Emergency Operations Centre as Tropical Storm Sandy heads near Jamaica, with projections indicating that the system will first hit southern parishes.

“We are actually meeting this morning,” said mayor of Mandeville Brenda Ramsay.

“Our contractors are on standby, all our agencies… and we will be getting reports from all the stakeholders shortly.”

Ramsay says drains that were cleaned before, have been revisited to ensure that they remain open.

Meanwhile, scores of people are doing last-minute shopping at supermarkets and wholesales in Mandeville in preparation for the storm.

However, there fewer than the usual number of taxis and buses in the transportation centres with fewer people traveling into the parish capital.
