JDF says stranded Pedro Cays fishermen ignored evacuation offer

2012-10-23 21:34:24 | (0 Comments)

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) is reporting that fishermen now stranded on the Pedro Cays ignored earlier offers to be taken back to the mainland.

And according to Captain Basil Jarrett, the head of the JDF Civil Military Co-operation, it is now too late to evacuate them as the military has since moved its vessels to safety.

“We are not doing any more evacuations,” said Jarrett.

He said the JDF began evacuating persons on the Morant Cays on Monday and continued on the Pedro Cays yesterday.

But Jarrett said only a small number of people elected to leave the Pedro Cays.

He says with the majority of them refusing to leave, JDF soldiers left petrol with them to help to fuel their boats in case they chose to head to the mainland.
