Gareth Davis, Gleaner Writer

Five people are now in a disaster shelter in Portland, as the parish is now reeling from the effects of Tropical Storm, Sandy.

According to disaster coordinator for the parish, Denise Lewis, the five people who are from the Breastworks community are now occupying the shelter at the Red Hassel First Holiness Church.

Lewis says with the opening of the Emergency Operation Center on Tuesday, communities that are prone to flooding will be closely monitored.

The approximately 88 disaster shelters across the parish have been activated and all shelter managers are on high alert.

Portland has feeling the effects of Sandy since Tuesday.
