Threatening waves have started to inch near people’s houses in Caribbean Terrace, St Andrew forcing them to scurry to secure their cars and other valuables.

One man was seen packing sandbags to be placed outside his home.

But one woman decided that she was staying put, at least for now.

"I have seen worse than this... I was here for Hurricane Dean," she said.

"I'm going to watch it and see," she added as relatives assisted her in putting sandbags at her gate to prevent the water from entering her property.

Meanwhile in Shooters Hill, score of residents have converged along the roadway to get a glimpse of the waves hitting the shore.
