Western Jamaica spared Sandy's wrath

It appears that western Jamaica has been spared the wrath of Hurricane Sandy.

Strong winds and consistent rains plagued the region for the entire day but there was no significant impact in the parishes of Hanover, St James, Trelawny and Westmoreland.

However, shelters are still opened in western parishes and the providers of emergency services are on full alert.

"We just have to be happy and thankful that we have been spared as the news coming out of other parts of the island is not so good," said Lucea's Mayor, Shernett Haughton.

"We are still keeping our fingers cross that the heavy rains that are expected to follow will not affect us badly,” she added.

In Montego Bay, which was like a ghost town in the early morning hours, residents began pouring out on the street in late afternoon as it became obvious that the storm had bypassed the western city.
