The former Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldier who was last week found guilty of the murder of a Northern Caribbean University student has been sentenced to life in prison.
Bernard Ballentine will have to spend 20 years in prison before he’s eligible for parole.
The sentence was handed down in the Manchester Circuit Court by Justice Bertram Morrison this morning.
Ballentine was charged in September 2010 for the murder of 23-year-old Shannel Norris.
The court heard that on August 11, 2010, Ballentine and Norris were travelling in his vehicle along Hart Road in Mandeville when an argument developed.
During the argument, a knife was used to slash the woman's throat killing her on the spot.
Ballentine, was later picked up by lawmen at the nearby JDF camp hours after her body was found in the front seat of his car.
After the incident Ballentine went to the camp to tell his colleagues at the time that something had happened.
