NewsCURE accuses Gov’t of blatant betrayal in JPS case2012-11-07 12:39:57
| ![]() Betty- Ann Blaine- file photo Lobby group, Citizens United to Reduce the cost of Electricity (CURE) has described as a blatant betrayal, the government’s decision to continue its appeal against the court ruling on the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) licence. Earlier this year the Supreme Court ruled in favour of CURE, saying that the monopoly licence issued to the JPS is illegal. The Energy Minister had publicly expressed support for the court’s decision but last week news broke that the government appealed the ruling. Today CURE’S Co-founder, Betty-Ann Blaine says the Minister of Energy and the government have been dishonest in dealing with this issue. Blaine is asking the government to state what aspects of CURE’s counter-appeal it finds so distasteful. She feels the government has chosen the side of the JPS on this issue. Blaine says CURE felt it was in the best interest in the government to sit with all parties to get the best deal for the Jamaican people. She says CURE will continue to fight for lower electricity costs, saying that the group will mobilize itself and explore other options to ensure this happens.
