Gov't to table Evidence Bill in Parliament

2012-11-08 07:30:15 | (0 Comments)

The Cabinet has given approval for the tabling in parliament of a Bill allowing video recorded evidence to be used in a coroner’s inquest and criminal and civil proceedings.

The Minister with responsibility for information, Sandrea Falconer made the announcement regarding the tabling of the Evidence Special Measures Act 2012 at yesterday’s post-Cabinet briefing.

It will allow for the taking of video recorded evidence through a live link.

It will also allow the court to receive evidence from witnesses who are unable to attend the court proceedings or those regarded as vulnerable due to the trauma or fear of giving evidence in court.

The bill amends the Evidence Act and had been previously tabled in Parliament but fell off the Order Paper on the dissolution of Parliament for the 2007 general elections.
