Damage assessment begins after St Mary flooding

Residents and businesses alike are this morning assessing the damage caused by flood waters in the northeastern parish of St Mary yesterday.

Showers associated with a stationary front yesterday caused hours of rainfall in the parish. By mid afternoon the streets and business establishments began flooding.

Our sources report that a group of shoppers in a Port Maria supermarket was trapped for hours, as rising waters threatened their safely. At least one car was submerged by the rising water.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management says the town of
Port Maria and the community of Oracabessa and sections of Junction in the vicinity of Georgia have also been affected.
