Chuck knocks gov’t on pace of legislation

Opposition spokesman on justice, Delroy Chuck has chided the government for the delay in enacting several pieces of legislation which he says are critical to fighting crime.

His criticism follows a statement by the Justice Minister Mark Golding that drafting instructions have been issued to the Chief Parliamentary Counsel for the preparation of anti-lottery scam legislation.

Chuck, who is the former justice minister notes that while he supports such a move, there are other pieces of legislation of equal significance that have been lagging.

Despite his criticism Chuck says he’s pleased that measures are being initiated to punish those involved in the lottery scam:

Golding has not said how soon legislation to address the lottery scam will be enacted.

But he says it will include provisions that will make it a criminal offence for people to illegally possess credit card and other personal information on other individuals.

Senator Golding says the legislation will also include the creation of new offences related to lottery scamming or Advance Fee Fraud.
