Homeowners in Portland whose houses were damaged during the passage of Hurricane Sandy will begin receiving relief vouchers today.

Labour and Social Security Minister Derrick Kellier and a team from the ministry will be leading the disbursement.

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller had announced that vouchers valued at $60,000 would be given to the 2,797 persons with severe property damage.

Simpson Miller also said 2,271 homeowners who had minor damage to their properties will receive $30,000 vouchers.

Cheques will be handed out at the Manchioneal Anglican Church beginning at 11 o’ clock this morning.

Meanwhile, the ministry said it would advise of cheque distribution to persons in other parishes at a later date.

The labour and social security ministry says the housing ministry will be responsible for providing housing for persons who lost their homes as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Three hundred and sixty five homes were reportedly destroyed by the hurricane.
