The State Minister for Transport and Works, Richard Azan says the final estimate of the damage caused by the weekend rains in St Mary is $620 million.

Azan says the figure was arrived at following an assessment on Monday.

The state minister toured the St Mary capital, Port Maria and several other communities following Saturday’s heavy downpour which caused extensive flooding.

He says the Ministry is now preparing a Cabinet note, which he hopes will be ready by Monday, in order to get funding.

In the meantime, the Jamaica National Building Society has pledged $1.5 million to fund hurricane Sandy recovery projects in St. Mary.

Parts of the parish were also badly hit by Hurricane Sandy prior to last weekend’s heavy rains.
