Warmington seeks injunction to block JLP deputy leader election

Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) member Everald Warmington has filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking an injunction to bar the election of three front runners for the posts of deputy leader on Sunday.

Given the urgency of the matter, it is set for hearing tomorrow morning.

Warmington is contending that under the party’s constitution, Christopher Tufton, Audley Shaw and Desmond McKenzie were not properly nominated to be elected JLP deputy leader.

McKenzie is slated to represent the JLP region one; Shaw, region three; and Tufton region four.

According to Warmington, only James Robertson from the JLP region two was duly nominated.

He says under the JLP’s constitution, the candidates must be nominated 30 days before the annual conference.

McKenzie was the last to be nominated on Sunday; Shaw was also nominated outside of the 30-day period.

Meanwhile, it is understood that Tufton was nominated by a constituency which is not recognized under the party's constitution because it did not have a worker corp in place.

Warmington has named JLP leader Andrew Holness, General Secretary Aundré Franklin and acting chairman Robert Montague as the respondents.

The application was called up for hearing in chambers today but was put off to allow the respondents to be served with court documents so that they can be represented tomorrow.
