The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has received a preliminary report into the death of a female ward of the State at the Horizon Remand Centre in St Andrew.

Commissioner of Corrections Lieutenant, Colonel Sean Prendergast, said the DCS is now preparing to submit the report to the Ministry of National Security for a full investigation.

Prison officials believe that 16-year-old Vanessa Wint committed suicide at the adult correctional facility on Wednesday evening.

Prendergast declined to discuss the report, but says it contains initial statements that were collected and is consistent with the information he has already made public.

However, he said the Inspectorate at the Ministry of National Security will now conduct a more thorough probe to demonstrate to the public that it’s an independent investigation.
