A St Catherine man, accused of stealing diesel fuel from a police telecommunication site in Lluidasvale, was today granted bail in the sum of $200,000.

Twenty-eight year-old labourer Sheldon Harris of Lluidasvale, St Catherine appeared before the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court on the charge of simple larceny.

Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green also released a car allegedly used in the crime on a bond of $500,000 on the condition that its appearance is not altered.

The case has been set for mention on December 4.

Harris is being defended by Attorney-at-Law Keiva Marshall.

Detective Corporal Kevin Smith told the court that on October 3, the police received a call about 9 o’ clock about suspicious activities at the cell site near Lluidasvale.

Smith said a police team was dispatched to the area to investigate where Harris was caught driving a Toyota Corolla motor car loaded with 55 gallons of diesel oil.

The policeman said while the car was being searched gunmen opened fire at them.

Harris reportedly jumped into the car and attempted to drive away.

A policeman was reportedly shot in his leg.

Harris was later arrested and charged.
