Major traffic operation in St. James

The Traffic Police are now conducting a major operation in Western Jamaica in search of guns, drugs and money.

Head of the Traffic Division, Senior Superintendent Radcliffe Lewis, said among other things, the operation targets criminals and lottery scammers, who transport the proceeds of their crime by land.

SSP Lewis says so far about 2,000 vehicles have been checked.

Of that number, he said 233 traffic tickets were issued, 30 vehicles seized and 18 registration plates removed.

The senior cop said 69 summonses were also issued by the Transport Authority.

SSP Lewis said the operation was also prompted by reports that motorists in Western Jamaica have no respect for the Road Traffic Act.

He said personnel from the Canine Division, Mobile Reserve, the Flying Squad and the Island Traffic Authority are also involved in the operation.

In the meantime, SSP Lewis said two security firms have been prosecuted for operating without a carrier’s license.

The traffic cop has said that his division will be going after commercial motorists such as security companies, manufacturers, and funeral home operators for outstanding tax revenue.
