Youth Minister Lisa Hanna has agreed to meet with Head of the Mustard Seed Communities to discuss a proposal for his charity to temporarily house teenage girls who are in conflict with the law.

Monsignor Gregory Ramkissoon made the suggestion against the background of last week’s alleged suicide of 16-year-old Vanessa Wint at the Horizon Adult Remand Centre.

She was among a group of girls who are being held at the adult remand centre.

The youth minister has come under heavy criticism from human rights and civil society groups, who lament that children continue to be housed at adult correctional facilities in contravention of the law.

Hanna said she has taken note of Mustard Seed Communities and she will be arranging a meeting with Father Ramkissoon to discuss the suggestion.
