Fewer than 300 road fatalities expected for 2012

For the first time in 13 years, Jamaica is poised to record under 300 road fatalities in a calendar year.

Thirty days before the end of the year, the Road Safety Unit in the Transport Ministry says 234 persons have died on the nation’s roadways.

This is 45 fewer than the 279 road fatalities recorded over the corresponding period last year.

The last time Jamaica recorded fewer than 300 road fatalities was in 1999 when 295 people were killed on the roads.

With the Christmas holidays approaching and a number of entertainment events planned for this month, Director of the Road Safety Unit Kenute Hare says December could present a challenge.

However, he says he expects all stakeholders to play their part to ensure there is no spike in the numbers.
