Journalists should keep issues in limelight

Executive Director of the National Integrity Action Limited, Professor Trevor Munroe has called for journalists to do more to challenge the impunity of government officials.

Citing a number of critical issues he said journalist have failed to follow up on, Professor Munroe urged media practitioners to put an end to what he described as the nine-day wonder.

He cited the bribery case involving former government minister, Joseph Hibbert and the issue of Party campaign financing, as some of the issues that the media has gone silent on.

He said keeping issues in the limelight is significant in combating the scourge of corruption.

In the meantime, Professor Munroe said the Portia Simpson Miller administration must update the country on plans to establish a single anti-corruption agency by the end of the parliamentary year.

He said the prime minister also has a responsibility to ensure that such a promise is kept because of the effects of corruption on the nation.

Professor Munroe was speaking this morning at the National Journalism week forum held at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston.
