LIME bemoans resurgence in copper cable theft

Telecommunications firm, LIME, is reporting that there has been a resurgence in the theft of its copper cables and other articles of metal over the past 6 months.

According LIME, since the start of the year, thieves have made off with $28 million worth of cables.

It says over the similar period, it has lost an overall $300 million to scrap metal theft.

The parishes with the highest incidents of theft are St Thomas, St Ann and St Catherine.

In a statement issued this afternoon, LIME said in the latest incident on Monday, thieves removed a section of a cable in Lawrence Tavern, St Andrew.

The company says between August and November alone, there were 37 similar incidents.

LIME is attributing the uptick in cable theft ton the Government’s announcement that the scrap metal trade will resume.

It says prior to the announcement in June, there were only only about 16 incidents.
