Senior cop contradicts Mark Shields at Boulevard trial

The Boulevard murder trial continued today with Superintendent Dean Taylor contradicting some of the evidence given by former Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields.

Taylor testified that Shields had told Assistant Superintendent Victor Barrett, who is one of the three policemen on trial, that he should give evidence against the other two accused men.

But Taylor said Barrett replied that he would not tell lies on his colleagues.

Last week, Shields had said under cross-examination by defence lawyer Churchill Neita that he did not tell Barrett to testify against the men.

Shields also denied suggestions that he had told Barrett that if he resigned he would not charge him.

But today Taylor said Shields did in fact say that to Barrett.

Taylor was testifying in the Home Circuit Court at the murder trial of Barrett, Corporal Louie Lynch and Constable Paul Edwards.

They are charged in connection with the murder of two men who disappeared from a plaza in St Andrew eight years ago.

The Crown is alleging that on December 23, 2004, twenty-year-old Kemar Walters and 44-year-old Oliver Duncan were taken away by some policemen after they were seen with a stolen blue Honda CR-V.

The men are alleged to have been shot dead and the Crown is alleging that Barrett covered up the incident when a report was made to him.
