Mayor to clamp down on extortion in Redemption Arcade

Mayor of Kingston, Angela Brown-Burke, says the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) will be taking steps to ensure that vendors selling in the newly-renovated Redemption Arcade will not become victims of extortionists.

She says the KSAC wants to ensure there is one legal system of payment and that any money collected will go to the appropriate authority.

The Mayor notes that oftentimes, the vendors quarrel about the fees being imposed by the local authority, but quickly pay over money demanded of them by extortionists.

She pointed out that if the only fees they had to pay were those imposed by the KSAC then it would not be as onerous.

Brown Burke was speaking yesterday at the official handing over ceremony of the Redemption Arcade in downtown Kingston by the Digicel Foundation, which is spearheading the renovation project.
