Lamasa workers to wait longer for redundancy money

The more than 400 former workers of Lamasa Limited will have to wait a while longer, to know when they will be given notice and redundancy payments.

The company’s management held another round of talks with the National Workers Union (NWU), which represents its former employees, at the Ministry of Labour yesterday.

NWU President, Vincent Morrison,said the company indicated that it needed more time to work out an agreement.

Morrison said another meeting is to be held on Monday at the labour ministry to discuss the matter.

The ancillary workers joined the unemployment line on Monday, as Lamasa’s contract with the Government to provide services at the Bustamante Hospital for Children and the Kingston Public and Victoria Jubilee hospitals came to an end.

Morrison said there are indications that some of the former workers may get jobs with the new contractor.

He said some of them are being interviewed to take up possible openings.
