NewsGov't denies name change proposal for Carib Territory2012-12-22 10:44:50 | (0 Comments)
The head of the indigenous people in Dominica, Garnet Joseph, says he is disappointed that after two years, the government has not agreed to a proposal to change the name of the Carib Territory to Kaliango Territory.
He says while he supports a decision by the Roosevelt Skerrit government to change the names of two of the island’s biggest mountains, the authorities should also look into the the Kalinago Council’s proposal. They argue that the word ‘Kalinago’ should be used because Father Breton, who lived among the people in Dominica between 1642 and 1653 wrote in his dictionary that it was the real name of the Caribs of the islands.
