Suspects in $50m heist await ID parade

A policeman and his brother who are implicated in the multi-million dollar robbery of a quantity of gold bars earlier this month will have to wait behind bars a while longer before the court considers an application for their release.

Their lawyers, Lynden and Vincent Wellesley, on Thursday filed a writ of Habeas Corpus in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.

However, when the application came up for hearing yesterday, police investigators informed the court that the men are to face a question-and-answer session and an identification parade on Monday.

Resident Magistrate Georgiana Fraser then set the matter for mention on January 2, 2013.

It is reported that about 9 p.m. of December 8, a well-known jeweller was driving along Duke Street, in downtown Kingston, when he was held up and robbed by a group of men at gunpoint.

The other robbers reportedly made their escape with a large quantity of gold bars estimated to be worth $50 million.
