JUSD demands NSWMA clear garbage

2012-12-30 10:39:56 | (0 Comments)

The lobby group Jamaicans United for Sustainable Development (JUSD) is demanding that the National Solid Waste Management Agency (NSWMA) to immediately put measures in place to clear the pile up of garbage in affected communities.

Convenor of the group Richard ‘Dickie’ Crawford says there are enormous piles of garbage in several communities in Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine and other parishes that are beginning to pose serious health hazards to residents.

Mr Crawford says there has been a noticeable increase in the swarms of mosquitoes surrounding some of the garbage heaps and warns that they could soon begin to attract rats and other pests.

The NSWMA, this week, revealed that the non-collection of garbage in some areas was due to mechanical problems with some of its trucks.

But Mr Crawford says the NSWMA must arrange for the hiring of the necessary trucks and crews to clean the communities.
