Statistics from the Jamaica Constabulary Force show that 217 people were killed by the police in 2012. This is 16 fewer fatal shootings when compared to the corresponding period last year. And this is also a reduction from the figure in 2009 which saw 279 police fatal shootings. Meanwhile, figures indicate that the police also saw an increase in the seizure of firearms and ammunition. The statistics show that in 2012 the police recovered 582 guns compared to 491 hauled in during 2011. The police say they seized 5,665 rounds of ammunition in 2012. This is 705 more than what was recovered in 2011. In the meantime, the police also said 8,679 persons were arrested last year. The majority of those who were arrested were for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
