The technology minister Phillip Paulwell says the government is close to signing off on an agreement to have number portability introduced in the telecommunications market.

Number portability allows consumers to retain their telephone numbers after switching service providers.

Paulwell said the consultations are complete and the measure is being fine-tuned.

He said a critical meeting is to be held with providers tomorrow to work out the final details.

The implementation of number portability was made possible with the passage of amendments to the Telecommunications Act last year.
