Gov’t to implement garbage separation system

Local Government Minister Noel Arscott says his ministry is now tabulating the results of a pilot project aimed at separating garbage.

Members of the public have been complaining about the non-collection of garbage in some communities over the past weeks.

Arscott said while there are financial constraints, the local government ministry is considering measures aimed at ensuring the timely collection of garbage across the island.

He said the garbage separation system, which is one of those initiatives, should be implemented this year.

The local government minister said the pilot project is already reaping success in some areas.

He said the government is also looking at increasing the fines for littering and the illegal dumping of garbage.

Arscott said his ministry is also working with the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation to develop an application for smart phones, to help to track and convict persons, who commit offences in relation to the improper dumping of garbage.
