Gov’t to roll out healthy school meals this month

2013-01-07 15:51:43 | (0 Comments)

The Government’s programme of introducing healthy juices and snacks to primary school children is to roll out this month.

The initiative, which forms part of the National School Feeding Programme, will first be introduced at the New Providence and St. Francis Primary as well as Swallowfield Primary and Junior High in St. Andrew.

The juices and snacks will be made from locally grown fruits and vegetable.

The initiative is being undertaken by the Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme and is being implemented by the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA).

RADA Social Services Officer for Kingston and St. Andrew, Brenda Green, said the aim is to encourage school children to consume more fruits and vegetables and at the same time support local farmers.

Green said 10 persons will be employed initially to produce the juices and snacks, with the numbers expecting to increase overtime as the programme grows.
