A St Mary woman is now in police lock-up after allegedly severing the head of her infant child this morning.

The 39-year-old woman of Annotto Bay, St Mary is reported to be of unsound mind.

It's reported that she had gone to the police yesterday asking them to take the child but they did not.

She allegedly returned home with the child, and severed the head of the one-year-old boy this morning.

She is being held at a police station awaiting a medical evaluation.

The woman is reported to have other children.
