The Industry and Commerce Ministry is today expected to provide the country with an update on its preparations for the resumption of the scrap metal trade.

On December 19 last year, the industry and commerce minister, Anthony Hylton announced that the trade would be reopened this month.

However, he said it would now be guided by stringent rules with appropriate penalties for non-compliance.

When contacted yesterday regarding a definite date for the resumption, the ministry would only say it would release a statement on the matter today.

The scrap metal trade was suspended in 2011 amid increased reports of theft of private and public infrastructure and equipment.
