Air pollution soars past danger levels in China

Air pollution in the Chinese capital Beijing has reached levels said to be hazardous to human health.

Readings from both official and unofficial monitoring stations today suggested that pollution in the Chinese capital has soared past danger levels outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The guidelines, as set out by the WHO, say average concentrations of the tiniest pollution particles should be no more than 25 micro-grammes per cubic metre.

It says air is unhealthy above 100 micro-grammes.

Official Beijing city readings today suggested pollution levels over 400.

Media reports say an unofficial reading from a monitor at the United States embassy recorded 800.
