Preparations for Earthquake Awareness Week have been boosted with a financial donation of US$30,000 to the Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona.

The donation by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), will assist the earthquake unit in monitoring the country’s seismic activities.

Director General of ODPEM, Ronald Jackson, said the money, will be used to facilitate the installation of four motion seismographs which are designed to measure high seismic activity.

Jackson said the new additions will go a far way in assisting the organisation to achieve a high standard of readiness to detect high magnitude earthquakes.

Earthquake Awareness Week will be observed from January 20 to 26 under the theme: ‘7.8 Wi ready…Yuh Ready?’.
