Nick Clegg has joined a growing number of people fighting to prevent controversial plans to remove Mary Seacole from the school curriculum.

The leader of the Liberal Democrats is believed to have said that the Michael Gove's plans to replace the Crimean War nurse with historical figures such as, Lord Nelson and Winston Churchill “is not going to happen”.

Lib Dem councillor, Lester Holloway, wrote on Politicus, a website specialising in UK politics: “I met Clegg last evening along with a small delegation of Black and Asian Liberal Democrats to discuss other race equality matters. When I raised the subject of Mary Seacole being dumped from the national curriculum, Clegg responded ‘That’s not going to happen’.”

Clegg joins the 30,000 people who have signed a petition to restore Seacole and the abolitionist Equiano Olaudah to history lessons.

The list includes Lib Dem peer Floella Benjamin, anti cuts and race activist Zita Holbourne and Labour MPs Diane Abbott MP, David Lammy MP.
