NEPA assessing MoBay gas spill

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) says its team will continue environmental assessment activities in the vicinity of the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James today.

This follows yesterday’s release of petroleum products from a gas tank which overturned at the round-a-bout leading to the airport.

NEPA’s Manager of  Public Education and Corporate Communication, Natalie Fearon, said initial investigation has revealed the presence of petroleum at the accident site and parts of the airport compound.

She said though no direct flow to the marine environment was observed, testing of soil and ground water in the impacted area will be conducted to assess the extent of the contamination.

Yesterday’s incident resulted in a huge traffic pile up near the airport.

Some departing passengers had to disembark their vehicles and walk to the airport to catch their flights.
