Parliament has begun debate on a motion to have the Throne Speech renamed the People's Speech.

Member of Parliament for North East St Elizabeth, Raymond Pryce yesterday told fellow legislators that such a move would help complete another aspect of the country's independence at no economic cost.

Pryce had moved the motion last year in the hope that it could have been adopted before the end of 2012, which marked Jamaica’s 50th year of independence.

However, the debate only began yesterday.

In opening the debate, Pryce said symbolism was important to a nation.

He said the motion merely seeks to replace the British emblem with the primacy of the Jamaican people.

The throne speech is delivered by at the start of each legislative year by the Governor General.

The speech contains the plans and programmes of the government for the ensuing year.
