UK VOICE: Burger King dumps products over horsemeat row
2013-01-24 09:45:25 | (0 Comments)
Burger King is throwing out thousands of beefburgers provided by the supplier at the centre of the horsemeat scandal, according to reports.
Beef Burger - File.
Staff at the fast food giant have allegedly been ordered to box up Whoppers and Angus burgers and told not to sell them to customers, according to Sky News.
The move comes after tests showed the Silvercrest meat processing plant in Ireland and another site in Yorkshire had supplied burgers with traces of horse DNA to supermarkets, including Tesco and Asda.
Tesco immediately withdrew from all products from sale and several others followed, but Burger King said last Thursday it would not be following suit.
However, the company has now said it is switching to a different supplier for its British and Irish restaurants as a "voluntary and precautionary measure".
The ABP Food Group, one of Europe's biggest suppliers and processors, stopped work at its Silvercrest plant in Co Monaghan after new tests last week revealed contamination in frozen burgers.
However, ABP has insisted that meat for Burger King was stored and processed separately and there is no evidence that its burgers are affected.
