Teachers warned tardiness could cause dismissal

President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association Clayton Hall is reminding educators in the public education system that consistent tardiness and absence from school is a breach of the education code.

He said if proven, those issues are also cause for dismissal.

Hall’s reminder follows reports that one teacher at Tarrant High School in St. Andrew has been late up to 89 times in one year, while the records show that two others were late more than 60 times.

He said while the situation at Tarrant is not indicative of the general teaching population, teachers must take note that absence from the classroom without a valid reason and consistent tardiness can result in their removal.

Hall also pointed out that provisions are made in the Education Act to deal with such issues.

The JTA President said failure to address the inappropriate behaviour of teachers brings into question the effectiveness of leadership at the school level.

When our news centre contacted the school to find out if action would be taken against the teachers at Tarrant High, who were reported to be chronically late we were told that the Principal would not be commenting on the issue as it is being dealt with internally and through the court.
