Jamaica refugee policy observes human rights standards - Vasciannie

2013-02-03 11:01:26 | (0 Comments)

Ambassador to the United States Professor Stephen Vasciannie has assured that Jamaica has a comprehensive refugee policy that incorporates international human rights standards.

Ambassador Vasciannie says the policy provides a good framework for the treatment of persons seeking asylum in Jamaica. According to him, it also provides a model that could be used in other countries throughout the Caribbean.

He says the policy, which was formulated in 2009, is based expressly on the 1951 Refugees Convention and the 1967 Protocol to the Refugees Convention.

The Ambassador was addressing a seminar on International Refugee Law, hosted by the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs of the Organization of American States in Washington DC.
