JLP's Meadows quits as North Trelawny caretaker

After two successive defeats Dennis Meadows has officially quit as the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP)caretaker for the North Trelawny constituency.

A release from Meadows today indicated that he formally handed in his resignation to the party's general secretary, Dr Horace Chang. Meadows said he resigned from the JLP caretaker position to take up a post in the lobby group he co-founded, the Citizens Action for Principle and Integrity (CAPI).

A former deputy general secretary of the JLP, Meadows unsuccessfully contested what he described as the 'politically challenging' constituency against the Peoples National Party’s (PNP) Dr Patrick Harris and Patrick Atkinson in the general elections of 2007 and 2011 respectively. The constituency has not been won by the JLP since 1980.

The often vocal Meadows said he had indicated his intention to quit the constituency following the disappointing results of the last election.

He asserted that his resignation should not be viewed as a departure from representational politics, but instead be deemed as a strategic move.

“In the interim, I will continue to lend my voice to the litany of issues affecting this country through a civil lobby group I have co-founded, namely, Citizens Action for Principle and Integrity (CAPI), with primary objectives of demanding and fostering principle and integrity in public leadership,” Meadows said this afternoon.
