Les Green says Jamaica has 'backward policing system'

Leslie Green, the former Assistant Commissioner of Police who was seconded by Scotland Yard to Jamaica in 2004 to assist with improving the investigative capacity of the Jamaican police, has painted a picture of an island with a backward policing system and officers who were next to lazy.

In a story published in today’s edition of the British newspaper, The Mirror, the now retired cop is quoted as saying that his arrival in Jamaica was like “stepping back in time”.

Green, who is credited with bringing about significant improvements to Jamaica's criminal investigations, particularly homicides over his eight-year tenure, says the country’s forensic capabilities were poor and ineffective.

The now retired ACP in The Mirror article described his eight-year tenure as frustrating, due to the level of violence and weak systems of investigation.
