Witter summoned to meeting at finance ministry

Public Defender Earl Witter has been summoned to an urgent meeting at the Ministry of Finance at 1 o’clock this afternoon.

Minister with responsibility for the Public Service Horace Dalley says  Witter, is being invited to discuss the perceived staffing deficit in the Office of the Public Defender which has drawn public notice, as a result of the numerous delays in tabling various reports to Parliament.

The public defender was expected in January to produce the long-awaited report on the 2010 incursion by the security forces into Tivoli Gardens which left over 70 persons dead. 

However, after missing earlier deadlines, he again failed to submit the report.

Witter had indicated that inadequate staffing and weak administrative structures had led to the missed deadlines.
 
Dalley says he anticipates that today's discussion will identify the areas of deficiency and the steps to strengthen the human resource and technical capacities of the office.

Members of the ministry’s technical staff from the Public Service Establishment Division are also expected to attend the meeting.
