No decision yet on taxi flat tax

2013-02-05 10:13:39 | with audio | (0 Comments)

The Tax Administration Department is seeking to assure taxi operators that no decision has yet been made on the rate of the flat tax to be paid by taxi operators.

President of  the National Council of Taxi Associations, Deon Chance, says players in the tax administration department have proposed a $6,000 per day tax.

However, he says this is totally unrealistic.

Chance is demanding an urgent  meeting with  the department on the issue saying operators have become very restive.

However, communications director at the Tax Administration Department, Merris Haughton, said operators have no need for worry at this time as discussions are still at a preliminary stage regarding a minimum tax which could be imposed on taxi operators islandwide.

The proposal for a flat tax was made by the National Council of Taxi Association which is seeking to reduce the hardships of its members in doing business in Jamaica.

It forms part of  a raft of proposed revenue measures tabled in Parliament in May last year.
