The Government has given a commitment to ensuring the Office of the Public Defender is adequately provided for in the upcoming budget.

The commitment comes amid indications that resource constraints may have contributed to the office missing several deadlines for producing reports.

The spotlight was placed on the office after it failed to present to Parliament a report on the 2010 incursion by the security forces into Tivoli Gardens.

Yesterday, State minister in the ministry of finance Horace Dalley met with the public defender Earl Witter.

Dalley says the government recognises the magnitude of the work the office of the Public Defender has to undertake and has committed to providing what it can in the upcoming budget.

He says the matter of staffing will receive priority attention.

Dalley says the government will be reviewing the budget of the office to ensure that it operates efficiently.
